Reviewing How to Article #3 - How to Connect with Native Speakers

Start    : 22:11 – 22:22
Title    : How to Connect with Native Speakers
Page    : -
Topic  : Some tips to connect with native speakers
Details :
The article is started with tha author’s experience when she tried to talk with a French native speaker. The author tried to talk with a clerk nicely, politely, with a smile and with a pretty good pronunciation. But, the clerk felt like she didn’t want her be there. The experience was awkward, seemingly for both of them.
After the author experienced it and she learned more about the culture of france, she got some points. France culture and her culture is totally different. in France, the people do not smile to the stanger when say greeting. When she really learned about the culture, she could do it better. There are three easy tips for ESL learners to connect with native speakers :
1.    Greet with “Hi, how are you?”
Learners need to make this their normal greeting everyday: “Hi, how are you?” they
can vary it to more casual, “Hi, how’s it going?” and so forth as they get more used to it. They can use it anytime they great someone for the first time. It can be a standard hello greeting to someone they see everyday.

2.    Smile, smile, smile, smile, smile
Every time we greet someone we need to smile. Get you winning native speakers heart by smiling. Do not ever give them a fake smile, it will give the opposite effect.

3.    Smile with the eyes
Learners need to genuinely smile with kindness from within. If they need help working on this one, they can think of something taht’s really cute and makes them feel warm and cozy. That will get that glint in their eyes they need to be ‘real’ to have genuine smile and win the hearts of native English speakers.

Purpose of writer : To help the learners get the connection with native speakers.
Quotation/expression : -

Opinion : This article is worth to be read, especially for ESL and EFL students who wants to have a conversation with native speakers. I have another tip about this, don’t ever ask or talk something sensitive or private in the beginning like asking for job, age, etc. It will be better to talk about their favourite foods, hobbies, good places, etc.

AGAINST HEADPHONES (Argumentative Article)

Day : Sunday
Date : 22 of May 2016
Title : Against Headphones
Times : 7 minutes
Pages : 2
Thesis Statements :
Some teenagers in America had lost their hearing. They  can’t hear rustles or whispers, according to a study published in August in The Journal of the American Medical Association. These teenagers exhibit what’s known as slight hearing loss, which means they often can’t make out consonants like T’s or K’s, or the plinking of raindrops. The hearing lost is caused by the overuse of headphones, they listen to the music with a high volume through headphones in hours a day.
Outline :
  • The number of teenagers in America with hearing loss — from slight to severe — has jumped 33 percent since 1994.
  • Many researchers attribute this widespread hearing loss to exposure to sound played loudly and regularly through headphones.
  • The history of headfhones.
  • Headphones work best for people who need or want to hear one sound story and no other.
  • Make it a New Year’s resolution, then, to use headphones less.
Pros :

Whatever you call it, children are listening to something on all these headphones — though “listening” is too limited a concept for all that headphones allow them to do. Indeed, the device seems to solve a real problem by simultaneously letting them have private auditory experiences and keeping shared spaces quiet. But the downside is plain, too: it’s antisocial. As Llewellyn Hinkes Jones put it not long ago in The Atlantic: “The shared experience of listening with others is not unlike the cultural rituals of communal eating. Music may not have the primal necessity of food, but it is something people commonly ingest together.”

Headphones work best for people who need or want to hear one sound story and no other; who don’t want to have to choose which sounds to listen to and which to ignore; and who don’t want their sounds overheard. Under these circumstances, headphones are extremely useful — and necessary for sound professionals, like intelligence and radio workers.

In the name of living a sensory life, it’s worth letting sounds exist in their audio habitat more often, even if that means contending with interruptions and background sound.

Cons :

many students overuse headphones. They are habitually blast MP3 players, including iPods and smartphones. They use headphones to listen to music at high volumes for more than an hour a day and risk themselves to permanent hearing loss after five years.

Resolutions :

Make it a New Year’s resolution, then, to use headphones less. Allow kids and spouses periodically to play music, audiobooks, videos, movie, television and radio audibly. Listen to what they’re listening to, and make them listen to your stuff. Escapism is great, and submission and denial, too, have their places. But sound thrives amid other sounds. And protecting our kids’ hearing is not just as important as protecting their brains; it isprotecting their brains.

Author's Opinion :

Headphones work best for people who need or want to hear one sound story and no other; who don’t want to have to choose which sounds to listen to and which to ignore; and who don’t want their sounds overheard.

Vocabulary-expression learned :
  • Ubiquity
  • Spans
  • Amplifier
  • Coil
  • Sermons
  • Din
  • Clamor
  • Ingest
  • Stiff
Comment :

agree that headphones can cause the hearing loss, actually it depends on the individuals who use it. because sometimes, headphones will be very usefull, as I experienced it, when I want to be focuse with my assignment but it's very noisy around me, I prefer use headphones but I do not overuse it with high volume. If they use it to listen to the music as often as possible with high volume for hours, of course it will make their hearing lost. So just use headphones properly.

THE SUMMARY OF NOVEL ( ULYSSES MOORE - THE DOOR TO TIME BY PIERDOMENICO BACCALARIO) #MidtermProject

ULYSSES MOORE COVER
Date of Publication : January 1st 2006 by Scholastic Inc.

THE SUMMARY OF ULYSSES MOORE:
DOOR TO TIME

Covenant family has just moved from London to Kilmore Cove, a small city located near the seashore. They live at Argo Manor, a big house left by Ulysses Moore, a mysterious man. This makes Argo Manor as mysterious as its owner. Jason and Julia Covenant, a twin children of the family, at first think that it will be boring to live in such a house. However, they are totally wrong. Argo Manor has more defiances than they can imagine, especially when their parents left Kilmore Cove to keep up with things in London and their friend, Rick Banner, comes. There is only Mr. Nestor, Argo Manor’s caretaker, who is given responsibility to keep an eye on the kids but he lets they do what they want. They decided to spend the day exploring the house.
While examining every room, Julia suddenly felt like swimming.  The three friends got excited and ran down cliffside stairs. The story began when Jason slipped when he climbed up the cliff and he hung on the cliff for a while.  Fortunately, he was able to swing over with help from Rick.  Interestingly, he found a box hidden in a hole by the cliffside.  The box contained a note that was written in a language that they could not understand. They went to the library room and found the Dictionary of Forgotten Languages.  Looking up letter by letter, they were able to translate the note into a riddle. The box also contained a note for a package pickup at the post office.
They picked up the package from the post office.  It contained a set of four ancient-looking keys, each with an animal at its end - elephant, newt, owl, and porcupine.  They continued exploring every room. He found a hidden door behind a large piece of furniture.  The door was locked and it had four key holes in it.  They were so excited as the keys seems to fit the holes on the door.  However, since all keys fits all holes it was a little tricky.  Then, they figured that the animals mean something - O P E N.  That worked!
Behind the door is a long staircase and a tunnel. The tunnel is dark, but they are keep moving forward. A few times Julia wants to turn back, but Jason wants to keep going. Jason risks his life by jumping over a large pit towards the end of the tunnel. Julia does the same in the end. They end up in a cave and find a ship inside. Inconceivably, Jason’s mind connects to the ship, and he makes the ship sail to the other side of the cave and shouts ‘Egypt!’. Once they are there, everything feels different. They overheard other people talking about Pharaoh, Egyptian Tomb, etc. They have traveled through time to ancient Egypt!

MY OPINION ABOUT THE NOVEL

June Foster creates the characters very clearly, and the story just like the real life. I got the feeling when I read the book, it’s so roller coaster. The story is about love and forgiveness. I really like the story, even the novel told the christian story and I’m a moslem and I have no idea about the church and their believes I still love the story and can catch the meaning. The novel is so recomended.

THE NOVEL REVIEW OF FOR ALL ETERNITY BY JUNE FOSTER #2

THE CONFLICT OF THE NOVEL

The main conflict of the story is about the believes of JD and Joella. Joella is a christian and believes in the one true God and JD belongs to the Exalted Brethern church and JD has been asked to marry a woman from EB church. The conflict is begun when Joella drove JD home after JD’s accident while they rode the bicycle, and Mr. Neilson didn’t like to see her with JD. His dad was so angry and yelled to Joella to get out of his house. Joella was so sad and she cried. Mrs. Neilson, JD’s mother, felt so sorry to her about that and she drove her home. The days after what has happened in JD’s house, JD was so confused about what should he do, and Joella felt the same.
JD thought that he would never meet her anymore because JD loved Exalted Bethren more than Joella, and he should marry a woman from EB church, as what his dad asked. JD decided to meet Joella for the last time, he should tell something to her and he should ask for an apology. Then, they met. JD ask her an apology and he said that they didn’t had the future, and JD also said he will alway love her and remember her whatever happens. Joella was so sad and felt she needs some prays and she phoned her firend, Dave Reyes, a pastor from her church to meet her at sturbucks two days later. In starbuck she told Dave everything in detail, Dave prayed for her and Joella hugged him as a thank you hug, but in another side over the window, JD saw Joella hugged Dave and he was so angry, why Joella found someone else so soon? JD didn’t believe what just happened.
Several days later, JD found a nice woman from EB church named Betty Ann, a nice woman who loves relationship and marriage. In a reationship with Betty, JD always compared her with Joella, actually he couldn’t forget Joella and still love her, he didn’t love Betty Ann but he believed that he will love her someday. One day, Betty Ann phoned JD and tell him that she got an accident while hiking and she got help from a nice woman named Joella Crawford, JD was so shock hearing that news, It couldn’t be happening.
A months ago, JD purposed Betty Ann in a Mall and she said yes because she had been waiting for the marriage. While they were hanging out around the Mall, she saw Joella and her sister, Tammy, she told JD and she asked him to approached them. JD couldn’t do anything he just asked for help to the God to help him out from this situation. Joella shocked when she met them, Betty Ann told her that JD just purposed her and she showed the ring to Joella. There was something stucked in Joella’s throat, she couldn’t say anything. She excused them and ran to the toilet, she cried. How can JD do that? What about he will always love her and remember her whatever hapens? And how can the woman is Betty Ann?
One day, Dave called Joella. He said that he heard about JD and Betty Ann’s wedding on the news paper. He also said that he met JD when he was with Henry, JD and Dave’s friend, in the Cafe and he had something to tell Joella. Joella then asked him to come to her appartment tomorrow. When they met in Joella’s apartment, Dave told her everything abaout his meeting with JD, he said thet JD had a bizarre behaviour to him. JD said that Dave was a womanizer, he didn’t know what JD was talking about. Then Joella remembered something when she and Dave met in starbucks, she saw JD in another side over the window and she believed that JD thought Joella and Dave were an item.

JD walked around at night and found Joella’s church, he met with an old man and woman there. JD had a conversation with them, they didn’t know that JD was from EB church, they talked about their God and life. Unexpectedly JD felt that he found the light after he got these complicated problems, he thought that what they said about tge god and the life was right but what they said was totally different from what he had learnt in EB. Then he rememberd when his sister, Garolyn, told him that she wanted to abandon EB church because she felt uncomfortable there she felt something was wrong. Now, JD also thought about doin the same with his sister, he decided to choose Joella’s believe. Days passed so fast, the wedding would come in a week but he still couldn’t feel the love on Betty Ann he couldn’t forget Joella, besides he didn’t tell Betty Ann and his dad that he decided to left EB church yet.
