Argumentative : Ban Smoking in Public Areas #FinalProject

The numbers of people who smoke have increased over the years. They still choose to smoke even though they are equipped with the knowledge of how unhealthy smoking can be. They decide themselves to the health risk of smoking. Smoking does not only affect the smokers negatively, but also the people around the smokers will be objected too because when people smoke in public, the smoke will travels everywhere throuh the air. Secondhand smoke is the third leading cause of preventable death (after active smoking and alcohol), according to the Manitoba Medical Association. They also say that the smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, 50 of which are known to be cancer-related.
Secondhand smoke has been linked to heart and respiratory disease; lung, breast, cervical, and nasal sinus cancers; strokes and miscarriages. In children, dangers include sudden infant death syndrome, fetal growth impairment, bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma and middle-ear disease. I agree with the author that smoking will affect children health easily beacause Children are easily influenced in their growing stages. In addition, in their growing stages they will imitate people around them beacause they cannot differentiate between right and wrong. Beside that, teenagers who see people smoke will think that it is “cool” smoking at the streets and they imitate the smokers. It has been proven in my country, there are a lot of teenagers smoking, even in public. They smoke with their friend after school, smoke outside hiding from their parents. People who smoke in public portray a bad example and subject themselves to deadly diseases, as well as long- and short-term health problems. Non-smokers should not have to live with the consequences of smokers' actions.
Not permitting smoking in public areas may help people refrain from smoking. Some argue that there would be a significant decline in the clientele in bars and clubs, but non-smokers actually outnumber smokers three to one. A ban could actually increase people going out because nonsmokers would be more comfortable. There may also be a sudden realization of the dangers of smoking. With the state government taking a stand, it may cause people to take another look at the deadly factors of "cancer sticks."
After a recent incident from the widely known Target Market program, people are beginning to feel that anti-tobacco efforts are losing their focus. At a local event a couple years ago, a punk band hired by the anti-drug campaign played songs that included positive images of cigarettes and other drugs in their lyrics. This is not the most efficient way to use money set aside for anti-drug programs. Instead, this money could be used to enforce the laws that should be passed to ban smoking in public places.
Sometimes those you think would be against the idea of making smoking illegal actually agree with it. Patrick Reynolds, heir to the tobacco empire, rejected becoming president of his family's tobacco company because it was proven to have caused both his father's and his older brother's deaths. Now, he runs a campaign to stop people from smoking. In his presentation, he states that a smoker will spend about $1,400 a year for one pack a day. Reynolds also says that the more secondhand smoke you inhale, the more susceptible you are to health problems. People working in casinos, for example, are up to eight times as likely to be in danger of the effects of secondhand smoke. Banning smoking in public places can prevent death and illness.
Some say that no matter what, nothing will reduce or stop cigarette smoking altogether. The laws banning smoking might convince some to quit and create a safer environment for everyone else. Also, some argue that there isn't money to carry this out. The money that goes into programs such as Target Market and Big Tobacco will be cut and the difference will go toward law enforcement.
Smoking is a dangerous habit that not only affects the smoker, but those around him or her. Banning the smoking in public will keep non-smokers safer. People who smoke subject themselves to deadly diseases by choice. Why should non-smokers be forced to be around it?

Some argue that smokers have their right to choose, but should the innocent pepole be objected to the unhelthy risk of second hand smoke? Definitely not! They have right to live the healthy life, breathe the fresh and clean air. Banning to smoke in public places does not mean the smoker can smoke in their homes, in homes there are children, pregnant wives, grand shildren and other innocents, hime is a plce where the family gather not the palce where the toxic fumes gather. The smokers cannot risk them from their unhealthy action. If smokers want to smoke just keep away from the crowds do not smoke in crowded placel. If you want to have a healthier and better life, just quit smoking.

Title
Psychological Factors That Hinder Students from Speaking in English Class (A Case Study in a Senior High School in South Tangerang, Banten, Indonesia)
Time : 25 minutes
Pages : 15 pages
Thesis Statements :
Feeling anxious during classroom oral presentaion is commonly expressed by EFL students, they often fear and worry to speak with L2 because the anxiety hinders the students to speak and the teacher sometimes does not recognize their anxiety, that is why the author conduct this study. The study is objected to investigate psychological factors that hinder students from speaking and the cause of the factors as well as the possible solution to overcome the factors.  The participants consisted of 62 second grade students of senior high school in South Tangerang, Banten province to find out their perspective related to the psychological factors that hinder them from speaking. In terms of findings, the study revealed that psychological factors such as fear of making mistake, shyness, anxiety, lack of confidence and lack of motivation hinder students from speaking in English class. Those factors, like fear of making mistakes, were commonly caused by their fear of being laughed at by their friends. The possible solution to overcome those psychological factors, most students believed that motivating them to be more confident to speak English is worth considering. This finding suggests that the teachers should be more aware of their students’ hindrance to speak in English class.
Research Questions
1. What psychological factors that hinder students from speaking in English Class?
2. What factors that causes the psychological factors?
3. What are the possible solutions to overcome students’ speaking anxiety
Methodology : The methodology of this study is Qualitative case study. This study employed three techniques of collecting data namely observations, questionnaires and interview.
Findings
1. Psychological Factors
The study reveals that most students have psychological factors in terms of practicing speaking in English class. Of the five psychological factors, fear of mistake range first (37%) while shyness is the second (26%), followed by anxiety (18%), lack of confidence (13%), and the last is lack of motivation (6%).
2. Causes of Psychological Factors
Regarding  fear of mistake, the result are relevant to the reports by Kurtus, (2001) and Frank Middleton, (2009); stating that students are afraid of making mistake because they are worry that their friends will laugh at them and receive negative evaluations from their peers if they make mistake in speaking English.
With respect to the cause of shyness, the results are in line with Bowen (2005) and Robby (2010) arguing that some shy learners are caused by their nature. This needs teachers’ effort to keep encouraging their students to build their self-confidence.
To turn to the cause of anxiety, the result are in line with what Liu, (2007); MacIntyre & Gardner, 1989 as cited in Zhou (2004) arguing that error and afraid of being evaluated are the causes of anxiety that make students very anxious in learning oral English. In this case, they are aware their performance is being evaluated by their peers and teachers.
With regard to lack of confidence, This is in line with Brown, (2001); Eli, 1986 as cited in Keramida, (2009) stating that students lack confidence and feel that they cannot speak English because they think that they do not have the ability to speak English well and their limited knowledge of the language.
In terms of lacking of motivation, The fact is lined up with Gardner in Nunan (1999) and Babu (2010) stressing that motivation is a product of good teaching, not its prerequisite, students are unmotivated and unwilling to speak English in the classroom among others are because uninspiring teaching and lack of appropriate feedback.
3. Possible Solution to Overcome the Psychological Factors
Regarding to fear of mistake. The result is actually a sign that students need to feel comfort with their teachers and believe that the teachers will help them if they make mistake. In addition, teachers should encourage students to ask for help without running the risk of embarrassment since mistakes are considered as a natural part of learning a foreign language.
With respect to overcome shyness, some students mentioned that they should do more practice to speak English to reduce their shyness. This condition for sure will make them get used to try to speak (Yeon Lim, 2003). In addition, the teachers should encourage the students in order to realize that being shyness is not a good thing because it will prevent them from improving their speaking.
To turn to possible solution to overcome anxiety, some students expected that their teachers should motivate them to speak English. Motivation from the teachers can give great affect to students when they are trying to speak English to express their ideas. This condition relates to the importance of motivation since it is an inner energy (Zua, 2008).
Regarding lack of confidence, some students addressed the solutions and suggestions either for themselves or for the teachers. They said that they tried to be calm and convinced themselves that they can do it. Meanwhile, they mentioned that he/she tried to keep speaking and ignored all the derisions that would make him/her lost his/her confidence and they expected that teacher gives the students more chances to speak English.
In terms of lack of motivation, some students shared their solutions to overcome lack of motivation. They said that he/she tried to motivate him/herself by keep studying English. Whereas, others asked his/her friends to be more serious and to respect someone who was talking. Further he/she added that the teachers should ask the students whether the students have understood or not and they more focused the solution on the teachers by saying that teachers should teach in interactive way in order to avoid monotonous class situation.
Conclusions :
Referring to the aim of the study, it can be concluded that students have psychological factors such as fear of mistake, shyness, anxiety, and the like that hinder them from practicing their speaking in English class. The factors, like fear of making mistakes, were commonly caused by their fear of being laughed at by their friends. In addition, in terms of shyness, the students said that their shyness was caused by their nature as shy persons. To turn to the possible solutions to overcome the psychological factors that hinder students from speaking, the students believed that motivating them to be more confident to speak is worth considering. In this sense, motivating students to speak in English, to some extent, encourages them to actively participate in speaking in
the class. All these suggest the importance of creating a supporting atmosphere of learning in the classroom.

Reviewing How to Article #3 - How to Connect with Native Speakers

Start    : 22:11 – 22:22
Title    : How to Connect with Native Speakers
Page    : -
Topic  : Some tips to connect with native speakers
Details :
The article is started with tha author’s experience when she tried to talk with a French native speaker. The author tried to talk with a clerk nicely, politely, with a smile and with a pretty good pronunciation. But, the clerk felt like she didn’t want her be there. The experience was awkward, seemingly for both of them.
After the author experienced it and she learned more about the culture of france, she got some points. France culture and her culture is totally different. in France, the people do not smile to the stanger when say greeting. When she really learned about the culture, she could do it better. There are three easy tips for ESL learners to connect with native speakers :
1.    Greet with “Hi, how are you?”
Learners need to make this their normal greeting everyday: “Hi, how are you?” they
can vary it to more casual, “Hi, how’s it going?” and so forth as they get more used to it. They can use it anytime they great someone for the first time. It can be a standard hello greeting to someone they see everyday.

2.    Smile, smile, smile, smile, smile
Every time we greet someone we need to smile. Get you winning native speakers heart by smiling. Do not ever give them a fake smile, it will give the opposite effect.

3.    Smile with the eyes
Learners need to genuinely smile with kindness from within. If they need help working on this one, they can think of something taht’s really cute and makes them feel warm and cozy. That will get that glint in their eyes they need to be ‘real’ to have genuine smile and win the hearts of native English speakers.

Purpose of writer : To help the learners get the connection with native speakers.
Quotation/expression : -

Opinion : This article is worth to be read, especially for ESL and EFL students who wants to have a conversation with native speakers. I have another tip about this, don’t ever ask or talk something sensitive or private in the beginning like asking for job, age, etc. It will be better to talk about their favourite foods, hobbies, good places, etc.

AGAINST HEADPHONES (Argumentative Article)

Day : Sunday
Date : 22 of May 2016
Title : Against Headphones
Times : 7 minutes
Pages : 2
Thesis Statements :
Some teenagers in America had lost their hearing. They  can’t hear rustles or whispers, according to a study published in August in The Journal of the American Medical Association. These teenagers exhibit what’s known as slight hearing loss, which means they often can’t make out consonants like T’s or K’s, or the plinking of raindrops. The hearing lost is caused by the overuse of headphones, they listen to the music with a high volume through headphones in hours a day.
Outline :
  • The number of teenagers in America with hearing loss — from slight to severe — has jumped 33 percent since 1994.
  • Many researchers attribute this widespread hearing loss to exposure to sound played loudly and regularly through headphones.
  • The history of headfhones.
  • Headphones work best for people who need or want to hear one sound story and no other.
  • Make it a New Year’s resolution, then, to use headphones less.
Pros :

Whatever you call it, children are listening to something on all these headphones — though “listening” is too limited a concept for all that headphones allow them to do. Indeed, the device seems to solve a real problem by simultaneously letting them have private auditory experiences and keeping shared spaces quiet. But the downside is plain, too: it’s antisocial. As Llewellyn Hinkes Jones put it not long ago in The Atlantic: “The shared experience of listening with others is not unlike the cultural rituals of communal eating. Music may not have the primal necessity of food, but it is something people commonly ingest together.”

Headphones work best for people who need or want to hear one sound story and no other; who don’t want to have to choose which sounds to listen to and which to ignore; and who don’t want their sounds overheard. Under these circumstances, headphones are extremely useful — and necessary for sound professionals, like intelligence and radio workers.

In the name of living a sensory life, it’s worth letting sounds exist in their audio habitat more often, even if that means contending with interruptions and background sound.

Cons :

many students overuse headphones. They are habitually blast MP3 players, including iPods and smartphones. They use headphones to listen to music at high volumes for more than an hour a day and risk themselves to permanent hearing loss after five years.

Resolutions :

Make it a New Year’s resolution, then, to use headphones less. Allow kids and spouses periodically to play music, audiobooks, videos, movie, television and radio audibly. Listen to what they’re listening to, and make them listen to your stuff. Escapism is great, and submission and denial, too, have their places. But sound thrives amid other sounds. And protecting our kids’ hearing is not just as important as protecting their brains; it isprotecting their brains.

Author's Opinion :

Headphones work best for people who need or want to hear one sound story and no other; who don’t want to have to choose which sounds to listen to and which to ignore; and who don’t want their sounds overheard.

Comment :

agree that headphones can cause the hearing loss, actually it depends on the individuals who use it. because sometimes, headphones will be very usefull, as I experienced it, when I want to be focuse with my assignment but it's very noisy around me, I prefer use headphones but I do not overuse it with high volume. If they use it to listen to the music as often as possible with high volume for hours, of course it will make their hearing lost. So just use headphones properly.

THE SUMMARY OF NOVEL ( ULYSSES MOORE - THE DOOR TO TIME BY PIERDOMENICO BACCALARIO) #MidtermProject

ULYSSES MOORE COVER
Date of Publication : January 1st 2006 by Scholastic Inc.

THE SUMMARY OF ULYSSES MOORE:
DOOR TO TIME

Covenant family has just moved from London to Kilmore Cove, a small city located near the seashore. They live at Argo Manor, a big house left by Ulysses Moore, a mysterious man. This makes Argo Manor as mysterious as its owner. Jason and Julia Covenant, a twin children of the family, at first think that it will be boring to live in such a house. However, they are totally wrong. Argo Manor has more defiances than they can imagine, especially when their parents left Kilmore Cove to keep up with things in London and their friend, Rick Banner, comes. There is only Mr. Nestor, Argo Manor’s caretaker, who is given responsibility to keep an eye on the kids but he lets they do what they want. They decided to spend the day exploring the house.
While examining every room, Julia suddenly felt like swimming.  The three friends got excited and ran down cliffside stairs. The story began when Jason slipped when he climbed up the cliff and he hung on the cliff for a while.  Fortunately, he was able to swing over with help from Rick.  Interestingly, he found a box hidden in a hole by the cliffside.  The box contained a note that was written in a language that they could not understand. They went to the library room and found the Dictionary of Forgotten Languages.  Looking up letter by letter, they were able to translate the note into a riddle. The box also contained a note for a package pickup at the post office.
They picked up the package from the post office.  It contained a set of four ancient-looking keys, each with an animal at its end - elephant, newt, owl, and porcupine.  They continued exploring every room. He found a hidden door behind a large piece of furniture.  The door was locked and it had four key holes in it.  They were so excited as the keys seems to fit the holes on the door.  However, since all keys fits all holes it was a little tricky.  Then, they figured that the animals mean something - O P E N.  That worked!
Behind the door is a long staircase and a tunnel. The tunnel is dark, but they are keep moving forward. A few times Julia wants to turn back, but Jason wants to keep going. Jason risks his life by jumping over a large pit towards the end of the tunnel. Julia does the same in the end. They end up in a cave and find a ship inside. Inconceivably, Jason’s mind connects to the ship, and he makes the ship sail to the other side of the cave and shouts ‘Egypt!’. Once they are there, everything feels different. They overheard other people talking about Pharaoh, Egyptian Tomb, etc. They have traveled through time to ancient Egypt!
